That Was Quick

Tim Welch joined the Hofstra University March 31 as the new men's basketball head coach. Three days ago he was cited for a DUI somewhere in Levittown, Long Island. Today, he resigned.

So before even coaching a game, or really doing anything meaningful, he's gone. Tip o' the hat. Mr. Welch. Back to ESPN ya' go.

Bango!!!

Do I even need to really caption this thing?

Sacto!!!

Need I say more?! This team isn't a playoff team, but they certainly have exceeded everyone's expectations and are going to be tough night-in-and-night-out. I can't wait to catch a game or two when I'm home (and watch them on TV). This is an exciting looking team that plays well together. Seems like the team is playing like, well, a team. Working together. And Jason Thompson is developing very, very nicely.

8-8. And it looks like some life is back in Arco Arena (7-2 at home). Amazing.

My Winter Reading

I bought Bill Simmons' Book of Basketball to read over Christmas break. Apparently (and thankfully) it can save my life. I am going back to Stockton after all.

P-I-G: Let's Hoop

Obama had the UConn women's team to the White House. You know the one that went undefeated, won the championship and never won a single game by less than double digits. Yeah that team.
Moments after congratulating the University of Connecticut's women’s team for winning the national championship, in front of the South Portico of the White House, President Obama hustled the team over to the outdoor half-court, away from reporters and cameras. The president prevailed in a brief, impromptu game of P-I-G with a few of the players.

“His shot’s a little unorthodox, but it goes in,” UConn Coach Geno Auriemma said. “He’s got a little bit of that swagger.”
In summation, Obama is dope.

thanks Dime

Scared Money Don't Make None

There was Memphis. There was Syracuse. There was Pittsburgh. There were a slew of teams that failed in the tourney. And the end result is that I'm failing at picking brackets this year. The last three have been good showings for me, but alas, this year I give it an epic fail rating. This is why I don't put money on things. Thankfully, it was a very, very small sum.

By the way Jayson, I'll mail you a check. I'm good for it. I think.

The Kind of Stories We Need

Sportsmanship is often lost on the game.

Then stories like these surface.

High School basketball teams faced off in Wisconsin. Only one player was missing its captain. His mother had passed away earlier that morning. He showed up late, looking to play ball as therapy. Problem was, he wasn't on the roster. So to get him in the game his team had to take a technical foul. Although the other team tried to fight the call, the refs said that by rule, they had to.

Solution? The team intentionally missed the two freebies. A player named McNeal, stepped in, volunteering to miss the free throws. This is what the game (and life) is about. Fairness, and supporting your peers in dire times.

This Gave Me the Chills

Somehow, I manage to play intramural basketball on Friday nights (so far). It's been fun. Although we lost a heart breaker on technical fouls. Also got my first and only bucket tonight. hahahahah. Nevertheless, I'm more of a fan than a player (that is an understatement requiring extreme emphasis on fan).

Saw this commercial while watching the Rookie Sophomore game tonight (recorded it). Pure awesome. The guys at Nike and Jordan definitely know how to make a commercial. Also, T-Mobile clearly hired a bunch of youngins to scream on every made basket. It's annoying.

Yeah, Why Aren't Asians Hooping More

The San Francisco Chronicle has a good write up on Asian Americans and basketball.

The article starts off with Jeremy Lin, the starting Point Guard for Harvard's basketball team. Also included: the status of Asian Americans coaching, and underlying factors as to why there might not be statistical changes in the near future.

Good read.

Basketball > Bowling

Well, obviously, right? If you've hung out with me for a prolonged period of time, you know I love bowling. Not competitively. But there's nothing like having beers and throwing the ball at a bunch of pins. Some of my fondest memories from home were bowling with Sly, Moose, and Chad on our old team. Yeah, it was basically Chad and Sly killing it, while Moose and I were the epitome of inconsistency. But it was a blast.

However, if you read this blog, you know my true love is basketball. I read the blogs daily (even in the offseason). I keep up with news, stats, etc. basically daily. And I love to play pickup games in Houston when given the chance (no, I'm not very good, but it doesn't stop me).

There were rumors floating on the campaign trail that if Obama was elected, he was putting in an indoor basketball court. He wasn't lying.

But not everyone shares my excitement.
The bowling lobby is concerned that talk of removing the White House lane -- which was built under the north driveway -- will have a negative impact on their sport. In an effort to change the president's mind, top bowling associations have offered to refurbish the lane with a state-of-the-art scoring system, high-tech bowling balls designed to grip the lane and a digital surround-sound system.
However, Obama's cabinet is littered with individuals who have ties to basketball (mostly at the collegiate level or lower). And Obama loves playing games, particularly before major events.

Mr. Obama typically spends some time on the basketball court ahead of big events, including elections. He is expected to play a game of three-on-three with his Hyde Park friends before delivering his Inaugural Address Jan. 20.

So I say, don't listen to the lobbyists sir, put in the court. Cause basketball reigns supreme.

Headlines

I've got a ton of tabs open on my browser with things to blog about. So, here we go.

Luis Scola, playing AWESOME defense. (Basketbawful)

Great Moments in Douchebaggery

Lebron James: the king of douchery
If you talk hoops with me, you'll know how much I hate Lebron. He's arrogant and kind of like General Douchebag. Or kind of all douchebags. He thinks so highly of himself and humility is like Kryptonite to him. Oh and then there's this:

If the Cavs scored more than 100 points against the Bucks every fan gets a free chalupa at Taco Bell. Well rather than score one more bucket and please the fans who help to pay his ridiculous salary (which will only get more ridiculous once he hits free agency), Lebron dribbles out the ball to end the game. Final score, Cavs 99, Bucks, 93. Then afterwards, Lebron says this:
“I can’t believe people who buy season tickets get worked up over a g– d— $1 (blank) taco.”
It's not a taco oh mighty basketball player who probably hasn't eaten fast food since he came to the league. It's a chalupa. And it's delicious. And it would have been FREE. But what do you know about anything. I hate you Lebron. I hope you go to CSK Moskow and are never heard from again (fat chance). P.S. take your Yankees hat with you.

Massachusetts, great moments in douchery.
A person from California is a Californian
A person from Texas is a Texan
A person from New York is a New Yorker
A person from Massachusetts is a......well a Masshole (that's what they call themselves).
ATTLEBORO, Mass.— A 74-year-old blind Attleboro woman was shocked when she got a letter from the city saying a lien would be placed on her home unless she pays an overdue water bill.

The amount? 1 cent.

Eileen Wilbur tells The Sun Chronicle of the letter sent her blood pressure soaring, and pointed out that the stamp to send the letter cost 42 cents.

City Collector Debora Marcoccio says the letter was among 2,000 sent out. She says a computer automatically prints letters for accounts with an overdue balance, and they were not reviewed by staff before being mailed.

The letter warned of a lien and a $48 penalty if the bill is not paid by Dec. 10.

Marcoccio insists the bill be paid.

Wilbur's daughter, Rose Brederson, called the situation "ridiculous."
Pretty douchey. But not surprising....

Astronaut Loses Tool Bag, Screws Up Plans for Spacewalk

HOUSTON (AP) - Flight controllers were revamping plans Wednesday for the remaining spacewalks planned during space shuttle Endeavour's visit to the international space station, after a crucial tool bag floated out to space during a repair trip.

The briefcase-sized tool bag drifted away from astronaut Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper on Tuesday as she cleaned and lubed a gummed-up joint on a wing of solar panels on the space station. She and fellow astronaut Stephen Bowen were midway through the first of four spacewalks planned for the mission. The tool bag was one of the largest items ever lost by a spacewalker.

All I can say is, good job Gary.

And finally in non-douchery news.

The Greatest Basketball games ever.

* 100 pts. Dajuan Wagner, Camden High (W 157-67) Camden County Vo-Tech-Gloucester Township, 1/16/2001 (N.J.)

* On a 40′ x 82′ court, the New York streetball legend “Pee Wee” Kirkland destroyed an Independent Fire Company or something like that in a league played in the Lewisburg penitentiary in 1973-74. He averaged 70.9 ppg, including games of 100, 82, 79, 60, 51, 50, 48, and 27.

* Oh, and Pee Wee went for 135 in January of ‘74, knocking down 62 FG’s in the process for a 228-47 win in that same league.

* In 1953, this guy John Barber must have been the truth. He had a 188-point game for Los Angeles State against Chapman College JV (92-153 FG), and a 150-point night against the Newspaper Sports Writers.

* Drazen Petrovic of Cibona Zagreb (Croatia) v. SMELT Olimpija (Slovenia) dropped 112 points in October of 1985.

* Wilt “The Stilt” Chamberlain famously hit 100 points in an NBA game for the Philadelphia Warriors against the New York Knicks (36-63 FG, 28-32 FT)

* 13-year old Mats Wermelin, the Swedish nightmare, took over the Swedish Regional Boys Tournament at Stockholm, when he scored 272 points. Wow.

* A 46-year old mother, named Anat Draigor posted 75 points in the second half for Hapoel Mate Yehuda en route to 136 for the night.

* This might be my favorite. Bob Harrison of Lagrange middle school destroyed the Arch Street School in 1941 for 139 points. He was a 5′9″ 13-year old 8th-grader.

Crazy stats....makes me wish I had talent and wasn't stuck in a library.

Triple X: When One X is Not Enough

If you've ever talked hoops with me, you will know that I adamantly hate Steve Nash. Why? Because he won 2 MVPs and is one of the worst defenders in the history of the NBA. I mean, he's a literal cone who cannot stay in front of his man. So for all of the points he scores and the assists he hands out, he probably gives up close to the same. A player does not make his team better through his inability to guard the opposing team's player.

But I digress. Truehoop did a nice little post on Nash with some commercials he's been doing. They're hilarious.

Hilarious at :55, "what are you doing? That's my [expletive] Shaq shoe?!

A lot of him sliding head or feet first.

and this was BY FAR the best one. Quotables throughout the entire footage.

An Analysis of President-Elect Barack Obama....

's basketball game:

in response to the election results, and with all due respect, here's a non-partisan scouting report on President-elect Barack Obama's hoop game.

Who says Obama never goes to his right? ( / Getty Images)

He can jump, run, and shows adhesive hands. The future president also has good court-awareness and will unselfishly deliver passes to the right players in the right places at the right times. His on-court joy, exuberance and celebrity obviously enliven the games in which he plays and inspire his teammates.

However, his defense relies on ball-hawking and is therefore somewhat shoddy. Plus, he's not much of a banger.

Also, he's totally left-handed — so much so that he probably has to water his right hand three times every day just to keep it functional.

But the worst aspect of his game is his jump shot. There's a hitch in his shot preparation, which makes his ultimate release point much too low. The result being that he tends to front-rim too many shots.

Anyway, forget about all of that political stuff. It's wonderful to have a genuine hooper in the White House.

Roadblocks to Gold: Spain

As an aside, I think the interviews went well on Saturday. I won't bore you with the details. Hopefully I get a callback, but if you know me, I downplay everything. Lowered expectations.

Went to the Battle in Bejing at the Toyota Center yesterday (thanks Brooke, you're the best!). For $50, it was admission, breakfast for two, two tickets to New Jersey vs. Houston during the regular season, and a Chinese New Year's event. Not a bad deal. USA looked a bit concerning at first. THEY CANNOT GUARD 3-POINT SHOOTERS. Too much collapsing on the ball handlers, as previously stated. China exposed (I don't know if it's really exposing if everyone knows) this problem, knocking down a ton of threes. The US's lead dwindled on more than one occasion because of timely threes. It was clear that China could not continue this pace of play into the second half. And they did not. Team USA waxed China by 31 in the end. Yi did absolutely nothing except committing a loose-ball foul (which wasn't called) on a put-back over Carmello's back/neck/head/etc. China is not the worst of our concerns though. Spain is.

Spain has a plethora of NBA talent. Pau Gasol and Jose Calderon are the two biggest names that have come over from Spain and played extremely well in the NBA. In addition, Rudy Fernandez (Portland) is a highly touted prospect that will finally come over and play this year. Juan Carlos Navarro played with Memphis and did well, but jumped ship to return to Europe, which he has said he enjoys more. Ricky Rubio (who I've shown on here before) is a 17-year old prodigy, who draws numerous comparisons to Pistol Pete. Marc Gasol is a seven footer, as well as Pau's brother, whos is coming over to play with the Lakers (I think). This is a team littered with legit NBA talent. In addition, these are guys that have grown up playing together, unlike Team USA who is thrown together. Chemistry on the court is everything. Lets hope we can outplay them when the time comes. It will be tough.

Speaking of Court, mock trial starts today. First round is in the federal courthouse. I'm extremely nervous. Wish me well.

What a Downer....

Zero.

That's the number of nationally televised games the Kings get this year.

Article

I cannot say how disappointed I am. Although, I guess it makes sense. They're not exactly the hottest team on the block.

I think we only play the Rocket's 4 times this year......hooray.

Guess it's time to get an NBA package. Oh wait, I forgot, I don't have that one thing.....what's it called? Money?
