I Wish I Could Be This Guy

Man eats 15 lb. burger?!

This guy ate a 15 lb burger, plus 5 lbs in lettuce, tomatoes, bun, etc. Oh, and one cup of ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise.

The guy did it in under 5 hours.

He also won a few hundred bucks for doing it.

It reminds me of Greg Giraldo's standup where he talks about how fat we are as a country and how we eat, and eat, and eat. I'd post the video, but I'm too lazy to look it up.

Cause this Always Makes Me Laugh

It's my birthday. I'm cramped up in the library trying to churn out an appellate brief. Needless to say this has been a crappy day. Well not that I'm big on birthdays, I'm just not big on sitting in a library all day when there's not a final to study for (yet). Oh and then there's the Federal Income Tax reading I need to do....fun stuff.

Then there was the start of the day (I'm writing Pulp Fiction style apparently) where I walked out of the house with umbrella to move my car into the garage and returned soaking wet because of the torrential downpour. I had to take off my dress shirt and iron it just to get it to dry. It hasn't been a terrible day. Lots of well-wishing on Facebook and a few on myspace. Can't say that I'm being neglected or anything. And Julio bought me my favorite pasta from the 13th floor for lunch. I didn't, however, get any free redbulls delivered to 4023.

Anyway, I needed to re-post this cause Brooke and I have been having a good laugh over it as of late. Plus it's my birthday. I'll recycle content if I feel like it!

It's About Time

McCain steps up and cleans up his campaign somewhat. The misleading commercials, the misleading rhetoric has got to stop. OBAMA isn't an Arab. Whether or not you believe in his political agenda is one thing. But he's an American. He's not a terrorist...this backwoods, ignorant mentality needs to stop. American politics are so polluted at times by uneducated voters. And that's not elitism. That's more of a shot at how our educational systems are failing us.

An Alaska Inquiry found that Palin abused her power in dismissing the Public Safety Commissioner of Alaska who allegedly refused to fire Palin's brother in-law, a state trooper. Palin's brother in-law was involved in a custody suit with Palin's sister and allegations have arisen that Palin wanted him fired, but that the Public Safety Commissioner refused to do so. Thus, the Public Safety Commissioner was removed. Palin alleges that it was a legitimate removal, as part of a budgetary issue.

The bipartisan inquiry panel thought otherwise. Now the State's Personnel Board has to decide whether or not she violated state law.

Naturally Palin/McCain supporters want the inquiry delayed until after the election.

I however, wish that John McCain would just find a new VP and admit that she sucks.

UPDATE: Alaska is an at-will employment State, as Jayson points out. However, all states, except for 8 (Alaska is not one of the eight), require that firings must not violate public or state policy. Therefore an employee must be fired for actual cause and the firing must not violate state policy/law. Further, Alaska also employs a good-faith requirement in firing (this is contract law and applies to employment agreements), which essentially means that an employee must be fired for actual cause. Therefore, if an employee feels they were wrongfully terminated, an inquiry is appropriate to determine whether or not there was a good-faith belief in the firing of the employee by the employer.

In conclusion, if there was a reasonable question of whether or not the firing occurred in good-faith, an inquiry is proper.

Shameless Promotion

For those of you who regularly read the blog, you know I'm pretty anti-McCain. But that has never meant that I'm against the Republicans. I view myself presently as a centerist; a conservative Democrat, or a liberal Republican; or better yet, an Independent. I had a great conversation with a guy I work with the other day (for the purposes of this entry he will be referred to as Dr. Snapples). Dr. Snapples, the other clerks, and myself frequently find our conversations revolving around politics. I'm not sure which way he's leaning. He's a well thought out guy, and I've found a lot of respect for him (as well as the other clerks).

We were talking about the current election and borderline unlawful and unethical practices of both sides campaigning for their respective candidates. Dr. Snapples said one of the most powerful things I've heard in a while. Essentially it was, a voter should look at the issues (s)he believes in and then find the candidate that supports those issues, as opposed to picking a side and finding ways to rationalize their positions and align them with your own. Powerful stuff. I think if we all looked inside we can acknowledge that both candidates have good, bad, and ugly about them. So when you go to the polls, please remember that.

For you Houston Residents, this part is important. With the disdain of the citizens of America for present politics, local politics will suffer. Particularly from straight-ticket voting. Straight ticket voting is possibly one of the least intelligent ways to waste your vote. Every candidate should get a fair look, and only then, should you make a decision. If you don't know the candidate, don't vote based on partisan affiliation.

Judge Halbach is the only judge I can speak for in the election. He's running for his seat in the 333rd District Court. He's been on the bench for 13 years now and has done a terrific job. He's also very fair and balanced (unlike FoxNews). He applies the law as it is supposed to be applied. In the modern era, partisanship can have a tremendously negative effect on the world in which we live. So it's important to elect those who are fit to sit on the bench.

Now, I concede, I don't know much about his opponent. But I do know what I've seen from Judge Halbach first-hand, and what I've heard from the legal community. His reputation is outstanding and he should be given a great look.

Check his website out here. Although his picture is a bit frightening at first glance, he has been a great judge and a great mentor. He is known for being fair to both plaintiffs and defendants, which has become more and more rare. His HBA poll ratings are the highest of any incumbent running in this election. He is more than qualified for this position.

I know many are presently frustrated with the issues before us. Crappy candidates. Horrible government. Even worse economy. But when you go to the polls remember that men and women have fought and died for our country and for our right to vote. Don't waste it. And don't ever vote straight-ticket. If you don't know the issues or the candidates, don't vote. Remember what voting is and remember that not everyone in our world has the opportunity. Value it. This year matters, both nationally and locally.

Also, the Judge is looking for willing supporters for November 4th. If you're in Houston and you'd like to help out on his campaign, he needs the support. Thought on Palin

Joey at Straight Bangin' never ceases to amaze me with his posts. So I stole an extract from a recent post on Palin and the debates:

Palin is generally uninformed. She cannot cite a mainstream news source, nor can she cite a Supreme Court decision other than Roe v. Wade. Her convoluted and incoherent speaking style, riddled with awkward idioms and misused words, is that of a woman who appears to have read little and to have received an inadequate education. For example, she continues to talk about Vladimir Putin "rearing" his head as though he's a gopher coming up from a hole. She often speaks as though English were not her primary language, and that owes, obviously, to her discomfort with various subjects and the challenge of discussing topics that she doesn't understand. It happens to everyone--I'd fumble my way through questions about quantum mechanics--but everyone isn't vested with the responsibilities of the vice presidency. And she's not falling short on complicated physics; she can't summon the name of a newspaper.

It wouldn't be so maddening, and it wouldn't be so dangerous, if Palin weren't running for national office. Then it would be funny. But instead, she is saluted merely for failing to make mistakes; she is excused for knowing so little because she delivers what she does know with a smile; she is praised for being rude and dismissive as though it were appropriate or desirable.

What kind of country is this? When did so many people decide that they were so comfortable leaving a hard job to someone so under-qualified? The same goes for McCain--what vast understanding of anything other than military affairs has he demonstrated? Is it really such a bad thing to be well educated? To have the mental acuity required to assimilate varied information and synthesize a nuanced understanding of a complicated world? We don't want that from the leader of our nation?
