The Names Have Been Changed....

....but the words have not.

[Brian Stevenson] saying well there goes my parents' paychecks to lazy people and i hope my husband will still have a job after the airline industry goes to hell! [emphasis added]

[Jennifer Johnson] Today America has chosen form over substance, emotion over logic, idealism over reality, but worst of all, color over quality. [emphasis added]

These are status changes from people I am "friends" with on facebook.

Maybe you know them. At this point, I hope you don't.

They will likely defend themselves, making claims that these words are misinterpreted.

But I am entirely disheartened about these statements.

These are my peers; my colleagues. People that I will likely be around for the foreseeable future, even beyond law school.

I say it again....tell me that racism isn't alive.

When the words "good ol' boy" still circulate in Houston and the South

When people allege that the country voted on color and not the 1 million other variables.

When those pre-conceived notions pop into your head throughout the day.

We've all been programmed from a young age.

Tell me racism doesn't exist.

I miss the days of grade school, where I wasn't fully aware of what race was.

As far as this country may have come, is as far behind as we really are at times.

You are hyper-sensitive to these kinds of comments. Everyone has bias. But bias alone does not equal malice. Not everyone feels the need to be political correct and self censor themselves and you know what? They shouldn't have to. You want free discourse and freedom of speech and open exchange of ideas ONLY if those ideas conform to your ideals. That is validation not discourse. You may not have read what you said: I want my peers to think like me. Welcome to reality. No mind control and propaganda. People have thoughts in their head that you don't like whether they are verbalize or written down. If they really are your friends and they behavior towards you is always cordial and friendly, what basis do you have to penalize them? Do you really want to step into a position of being the "Thought Police"?

Something to think about.

I just read your post again.

The United States of America has just elected its first Afro-American President. That is huge. Didn't you hear Obama talking about the 106 year old lady from Atlanta that was born before cars were on the roads and planes were in the air? How he talked about the change that has happened in her lifetime? Completely erase racism? That is a pretty tall order. One foot in front of the other, Dave. Patience. Today is not a day for negativity. It is a day to celebrate a huge step toward racial equality and don't be discouraged if others around you can't see it.
